SIR Games Score: 8.5/10
(Note: This score is in relation to iOS apps only as we cannot compare a mobile game to games like Halo: Reach)
Amazing. Beautiful. Revolutionary. Those are the words I would use to describe Infinity Blade. Before this, iOS gaming consisted of shooting birds at green pigs, cutting ropes, and watching helplessly as your blocky “3D” character fails to follow your commands. But now, with the implementation of the Unreal Engine 3, iOS gaming will never be the same. And the first game to showcase its abilities is this. Are you ready to start the Bloodline?
Story and Gameplay (6.5/10)*
| See that guy in the throne back there... Yeah that's the God King. |
Roughly 20 years ago, your father was killed by the God King, and your only mission in life is to kill him. After the cutscene showing this, the title will pop up showing the words “Start The Bloodline” underneath it. This is because you will be playing as you and your descendants throughout the game. The aim of the game is to kill the God King’s Minions until you reach the top where you will face the God King and his personal bodyguard. However, if you are killed by the God King, you will not be resurrected (if you are killed by anyone else, you can opt to load checkpoint).
Instead, the game will cut to around 20 years later, and your son, armed with the same equipment, experience and stats you had before you died, will wish to avenge you. However, the monsters will be stronger and there will be new ones as well, but the God King is the only enemy who will remain the same until you defeat him.
This cycle will continue, but don’t be put off by the lack of story. If you kill the God King, you will be hinted about the coming updates and stronger monsters, so it seems as though the story will progress through updates. But as of now, if you kill the God King, you will be sent 20 years into the future again and you have to try to kill a stronger, better God King.
Like it is said in the preview, the unique part of this game is that the method of earning XP is through mastering items. To do that you must win fights against monsters, but once an item is mastered, there are no added benefits, and the only change is that you cannot gain XP from it anymore. So once you master an item you should buy another one so you can gain more experience.
Graphics (10/10)*
This is what has made Infinity Blade so critically acclaimed. The gameplay can be addictive and engrossingly fun, but the graphics is what caught our eye, and in some cases, it is what will make us stay. The graphics, without a doubt, can be called the best on the system, as of right now. Some minor flaws that sometimes the animations are slow, but this problem soon goes away, and sometimes there are glitches. But expect these problems to be fixed as iOS apps are continuously updated.
Also, if you want the best possible graphics, I suggest you use the iPhone or iPod 4G. But if you want a more comfortable experience, you should use the iPad.
Conclusion
I seriously doubt that there will be another game with a great combination like this on the Apple App Store anytime soon. Its cutting edge graphics, along with hooking gameplay and growing story, destroys any competition seeking to win the title of “Most Console-like Experience”. However, I am sure not everyone will agree with me, as the gameplay may get a little repetitive. But even if we don’t disregard the repetitive gameplay, I would choose this app over Angry Birds or Cut the Rope any day. If you are a mobile gamer looking for a game with great graphics and you wish to find a game suitable for you, this game is your best bet.
