It was just a few months ago when, it seemed that EA Sports had turned its back on PC gaming all together. With major series like NBA Live (now called NBA Elite), NHL, and Madden being cut from the PC, as well as FIFA 10 being merely a shadow compared with the console version of the game, it didn’t look too good for the PC. Adding injury to insult, FIFA World Cup 2010 was omitted from the PC and PC gamers were outraged, some even abandoned their favorite gaming company, but in their darkest hour, a savior rose. That savior was FIFA 11.
Engine
Using the same engine as the consoles, FIFA 11 has great graphics that can surpass the consoles, if you have the capable hardware, smooth gameplay with 360o dribbling and new game modes. The game’s engine has excluded quite a few features of the console version, but it has all the features of FIFA 10 on the consoles, so if you played that before it might feel like déjà vu. However if you are exclusively a PC gamer, then it will feel smooth and unique. The Arena is included, and if you didn’t know, it is the part of the game where you go 1 on 1 with the goalie on the main menu. This time however there are no mouse controls, so you better get a gamepad or you will seriously lose a lot.
Gameplay and Modes
As I have mentioned above, 360o dribbling has finally arrived, so you can finally maneuver around all those annoying defenders. However, the intelligence of the AI is also upgraded, especially the goalkeepers. Manager mode is vastly improved as it is the same as the FIFA 10 console version and “Be a Pro” Mode was improved as well. The Manager Mode is great as transfers are more realistic because this time even if you offer the player a ton of money, they still may not join you if they aren’t interested in your team. For example, when I tried to sign Thierry Henry, the only player I was able to try to sign at that time, to my team Manchester City, I had offered him way more than he is worth. Despite this his manager’s reply was, “He thinks he would only be one of the many on your team.” Even though this implies that my team has many great players, it also shows that the transfer system has vastly improved.
Graphics
The graphics are beautiful. You can see the huge difference between FIFA 10 and FIFA 11 on the PC. The detail of the stadium and environment is vastly improved and player’s facial expressions, as well as features, are improved as well. The game’s menu is similar to the menu for the console version, with only a few differences. One great thing that isn’t available to the console versions is the ability to have even greater graphics!* On the last release on the PC, even if you used the highest graphics settings, it would pale in comparison with the console version, but now the PC version is able to surpass the graphics of the consoles.
Conclusion
Despite the FIFA 11 being a great improvement from FIFA 10 on the PC, it still will be compared with the console versions and although the PC version has better graphics they have fewer features. No “Be a Goalkeeper” Mode, Pro Passing, Personality Plus, and improved Celebrations.
Despite this, the game is a huge jump for the FIFA PC games, as it seems like EA has finally decided to include most of the features of the consoles on to the PC. Let’s just see if they continue this next year.
Point Form:
+Graphics that surpass console versions
+Same engine as console version
-Less features than console versions(No “Be a Goalkeeper” Mode and Personality Plus)
+Huge improvement from PC version of FIFA 10
+Improved Goalie AI
+360o dribbling
+Realistic Manager Mode
-Graphics can only surpass console version if you have the capable hardware specs
-Very similar to FIFA 10 on the consoles
-No mouse controls
Final Score: 6.5
*This review and score is based only from playing the PC version, which compared to game consoles, has less features. Therefore, if you wish to have the maximum effect, we recommend you getting the consoles version of FIFA 11.
*For PCs, you must have the capable hardware for greater graphics and smoother gameplay.
