Well, cloud services like Steam, Onlive and Gaikai have debatably transformed the gaming industry into a new era - a type of online gaming which offers on-demand streaming of video games onto any platform. In which case, is gaining popularity while gamers do not need to physically own copies and can now play their favourites on various platforms including TVs and recently, iPads.
"Every time someone uses Gmail, Netflix Instant, or Amazon's Cloud Player, they're already buying into the concept of using a service without physically owning or installing something"
Considering the fact that more and more users are now relying on these type of services, the prospect of Cloud Gaming certainly seem more legitimate and apt for the future. Just because we are comfortable with a certain style of gaming (consoles/PCs) doesn't mean that it is best or that there isn't any space for something bigger, better and bolder. The day the industry settles comfortably and not seek advancements, the day it will start to fade away. There are lots of opportunities and empty gaps for the industry to open up and create a new experience, and Cloud Gaming is simply one of the ways.
Getting back, director of hardware marketing for PlayStation John Koller did say that:
"The definition of console gaming is quickly becoming more a discussion about content and experiences than form factor"
Now all you need to do is sign in, no matter where you are, what you are on, and everything will be literally at the reach of your fingertips - move and press buttons and your entire gaming library will be orderly laid out for you. What you need is simply anything, anything at all with a controller input and a video decoder. If that hasn't got your attention, you will now not need to spend as much as game consoles, thus saving about a few hundred dollars which can instead be used to buy about 2 to 4 video games.
But, does all these perks define the end of game consoles? Philip Asher of games developer Trendy Entertainment commented that:
"I don't think consoles are going to disappear, just evolve. Their function will be media, not purely games, and their input may be completely different."and Scott Steinberg expressed that:
"Given their established brand, considerable fan bases and exclusive games, video games consoles will enjoy popularity for the forseeable future"
What do you think? Do you agree the console gaming will be a thing of a past? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts with us.

hope someone at onlive are reading these posts, as i along with many others would already be customers if they would ship their hardware to canada...
It will suck when your internet goes down. Also I like to revisit some of my old games get trophies I didnt have or just complete it on a higher difficulty. What if they decide a game is too old and they dont want it on thier server cause 1 million people arent playing that game? What if I like a game everybody hates and they dont want it on thier server but I want to play it? anyone ever watch a bad movie just to make fun of how bad it was? Or just to play a game that was great but no one is playing on my system I dont need the net or mass approval to play games I want to play All I have to do is by them once heck I cant even by them used or wait till they are in the bargain bin.
I use Onlive, and it's pretty awesome. Games are a lot cheaper than they would be on a console, and I don't have to have a $100 graphics card to play good games like Homefront or Assassin's Creed. Since it's streaming, the consoles are also tiny and use up very little power, and all it needs is an ethernet cable and a power cable.
Cloud gaming will never be a realistic replacement for consoles until a larger base of homes have high speed internet.
to relieve u of your doubt,i should say here in iran the average internet speed is one meg, mine is 512 kb per second! future consoles will be optional, like u want to play a game via psn or xblive,or just use disks.
your call, hell yeah! where is the nerd?
Bought 74 games (+2 free microconsoles) on Onlive for ~$320 bucks and I can access any of em whenever I want instantly. Sales are spectacular! Steam like even! Support is very responsive. Community is mostly mature and very helpful.
Sometimes us OnLive'rs come out on the net to comment. Most of the time we're too busy playing lol. BTW there's a bunch of great sales going on for 4th of July and if you're a PlayPack subscriber you'll get a free full PlayPass on the 5th (Even if you subscribe by the end of the day on the 4th). Also, we're playing multiplayer with Fear 3 devs this Wednesday night (I think it's Wed, it's in the Showcase in-service). Great stuff. CYA!
In case there were misunderstandings... just try it. Friend me - playertag Ultralord
